This is a loss for transit advocacy.

A leader of the conservative movement, Paul Weyrich, died this morning. What is less known is Weyrich’s passionate advocacy for rail transit, particularly streetcars and electrified trains, as a manifestation of his conservative principles.

I had hoped to interview Weyrich for the upcoming issue of More Riders Magazine on advocacy. I’m sorry I won’t get that chance to speak to him.

I’ll remember Weyrich, particularly when working with conservatives who don’t yet share his insight on the economic security value of transit. And with Republican Congressman Ray LaHood likely to be appointed as the next Secretary of Transportation, Weyrich’s work on making the conservative case for rail investment continues to inform public policy development.
