Smart move by the Vancouver transit agency and the Olympics team — every ticket will include an extra surcharge to cover the cost of providing transit to ticketholders. Instead of providing free parking, they are providing transit.
I like that the transit agency is aggressively looking for partners to sell tickets. Every agency should be looking to add-on fares and passes onto other institutions’ tickets (like tickets to events or even property tax bills in special districts). Get the ridership and the revenue from as many different sources as possible!
Why shouldn’t a hospital decide to pay for special bus routes instead of building a new parking structure? Why shouldn’t every ticket to a ballpark include a free ride on the bus or the El for that day with an extra surcharge — so the ballpark doesn’t have to build, maintain and finance parking lots and the neighborhood won’t be swamped by cars?
Sell more tickets and get more riders!
