This is smart partnership — Charlotte’s transit system cut a deal with the owners of their big sports arena (connected to their light rail line) to start selling transit passes as part of their sports tickets.

The Charlotte Business Journal has the story.

One of the reasons we don’t sell enough tickets and collect enough fare revenue (if a bus or train isn’t completely sold out, then we’re not selling enough tickets for that run) is because there aren’t enough distributors for the fares to make it easy for infrequent users to ride. And we don’t have enough destinations along routes promoting transit (because that’s one less car in the ‘free’ parking lot that the destination has to pay for).

If there isn’t someone in your agency with the task of convincing the major destinations along your best routes to sell fares or otherwise partner up in marketing your service, you ought to get that task assigned as part of a strategic and comprehensive communications plan and stop leaving farebox money on the table (or in the parking lot, as the case may be).
